The slot machine is the most misunderstood game in any casino. Unlike blackjack or poker, there is no strategy to learn and no skill to develop. And yet slot machines generate more revenue than all other casino games combined, in both physical and online venues. Their appeal is profound and their mechanics are more sophisticated than most players realize.
The original slot machine was a mechanical device invented in 1895 by Charles Fey, a San Francisco mechanic. Fey's Liberty Bell had three spinning reels, each printed with five symbols: horseshoes, diamonds, spades, hearts, and a cracked Liberty Bell. Pull the lever, the reels spin, and if three Liberty Bells aligned, you won the jackpot: fifty cents. The machine was immediately popular and spawned dozens of imitations.
For decades, slot machines remained mechanical. A central shaft supported three reels, each with stops that could land on symbols or blank spaces. The mathematics were transparent: if a reel had ten stops and one jackpot symbol, the odds of hitting the jackpot on all three reels were 1 in 1,000. Operators could count the stops and calculate the odds precisely.
The electronics revolution changed everything. By the 1980s, the mechanical reels were replaced by virtual reels managed by a microprocessor. Return to Player (RTP) is the most important number associated with any slot machine. Expressed as a percentage, RTP represents the proportion of wagered money that the machine returns to players over a statistically large number of spins. A slot with a 96% RTP will, in theory, return $96 for every $100 wagered — keeping $4 as the house margin. In practice, RTP is calculated over millions of spins, and individual sessions can vary enormously.
Online slots typically have RTPs between 94% and 98%, generally higher than physical casino slots, which often range from 85% to 95%. RTPs are required to be published by reputable operators and are verified by regulators.
Volatility (also called variance) describes the pattern of those returns. A low-volatility slot pays out small amounts frequently, providing a steady stream of small wins.
