The Mathematics of Roulette: Wheels, Odds and the House Edge

Roulette has captivated players for nearly 300 years. Here's the actual mathematics behind the bets, the odds, and why the wheel always wins over time.

The roulette wheel is one of the most iconic objects in gaming culture — a beautifully engineered instrument of chance that has been spinning in casinos since the late 18th century. Its origins involve a failed experiment in perpetual motion, which, given the history of players trying to beat it, seems fitting.

Blaise Pascal, the French mathematician and physicist, designed a primitive version of the roulette wheel in the 17th century while attempting to create a perpetual motion machine — a device that would spin forever without external energy. He failed at perpetual motion, but the wheel itself was eventually adapted into a gambling device. By the late 1700s, roulette in a recognizable form was being played in Parisian casinos.

The modern roulette wheel comes in two primary variants, and the difference between them is significant. The European wheel has 37 pockets numbered 0 through 36. The American wheel has 38 pockets: 0, 00, and 1 through 36. That single additional pocket — the double zero on the American wheel — nearly doubles the house edge, making the European version substantially more favourable for players.

On a European wheel, the house edge on all standard bets is 2.7%. On an American wheel, it is 5.26%. To understand why, consider a straight-up bet on a single number. If you win, the casino pays 35 to 1. But there are 37 (or 38) possible outcomes, not 36. The casino is paying you as if there are 36 outcomes while quietly pocketing the advantage created by the zero pockets. Over thousands of spins, those zeros drain money systematically and predictably.

Roulette offers a wide variety of bets, all of which carry the same house edge (on the European wheel, with one exception). Inside bets are placed on specific numbers or small groups: a straight-up bet on one number pays 35:1; a split on two adjacent numbers pays 17:1; a street on three numbers in a row pays 11:1; a corner on four numbers pays 8:1. Outside bets cover larger portions of the wheel: red or black, odd or even, high or low all pay 1:1; dozens and columns pay 2:1.

Every single one of these bets has an expected value of -2.7% per spin on a European wheel. This is the beauty and the tyranny of roulette: the mathematics are completely transparent, completely uniform, and completely unbeatable through betting strategy alone.

Betting systems like the Martingale (doubling your bet after each loss) or the Fibonacci (increasing bets according to the Fibonacci sequence) are mathematically ineffective. They can change the pattern of wins and losses, but they cannot change the expected value per spin, which remains -2.7% regardless of what system is applied. The Martingale in particular is dangerous: it requires exponentially increasing bets to recover losses, and table limits ensure that you will eventually hit a loss streak long enough to exceed either the table maximum or your bankroll.

The one exception to the uniform house edge on European wheels is the En Prison and La Partage rules, which some European casinos apply to even-money bets. Under La Partage, if the ball lands on zero, you recover half your even-money bet. This halves the effective house edge on those bets to 1.35%, making it among the best odds in the casino.

Roulette endures not because it can be beaten — it can't — but because it is perfectly balanced as an entertainment experience: simple enough to understand instantly, complex enough to remain interesting, and paced slowly enough to sustain conversation and atmosphere. The mathematics are honest. The game is what it is.
